On 7 April, President of Latvia visited Chisinau and met with judges of the Moldovan Constitutional Court. Judges of Moldovan Constitutional Court praised Latvian Constitutional Court for excellent partnership. The recently-established Constitutional Court of Moldova has transferred a lot of constitutional court elements from Latvia. Judges of the Moldovan Constitutional Court hope to continue cooperation with Latvia and sign a long-term cooperation agreement with Latvian Constitutional Court.
President of Latvia praised Moldovan Constitutional Court for its role in strengthening the rule of law in Moldova. Effective rule of law requires strong constitutional court that can ensure it, said Egils Levits.
Moldova is going through enormous changes right now, broad reforms are implemented also in judicial system, President Levits added. Acts and rulings of Constitutional Court will have a huge impact on how successfully Moldova moves towards the rule of law and democracy, he said.
President of Latvia also raised the issue of prosecution of Russia for its war crimes in Ukraine and attempts of international community to investigate crimes and find all those responsible for committing them. He underlined that Latvia supports Ukraine’s efforts to identify and prosecute all war criminals and called for special international tribunal.
Egils Levits also mentioned the international conference organised by Latvian Constitutional Court this September, which will focus on sustainability as one of the values in the constitutional law. Judges of the Moldovan Constitutional Court mentioned that they would be delighted to take part in the conference.
