On 24 September, President of Latvia Egils Levits, who is currently visiting the US, met with Governor of Michigan Gretchen Whitmer. President invited Governor to visit Latvia in 2023 and mark the 30th anniversary of formal cooperation between the Michigan National Guard and National Armed Forces of Latvia, decide on further exchanges between sides in various areas and attend the 150th anniversary events of the National Song and Dance Festival.
Family of the Governor of Michigan has ties with Latvia. Gretchen Whitmer did not hide her warm feelings for the Latvian community in the United States during the conversation and showed genuine interest in going to Latvia.
President Levits and Governor Whitmer noted the positive economic recovery trends in Michigan and Latvia, discussed the fight against COVID-19 and activities of the Latvian community.
President of Latvia once again thanked Michigan National Guard for its significant contribution to Latvia’s and NATO’s collective defence.
