President of Latvia Egils Levits will attend the 76th session of the UN General Assembly in New York and visit the State of Michigan in scope of a working visit to the United States of America (USA) on 19-24 September.
In his UN General Assembly speech to be delivered on 21 September, President of Latvia Egils Levits will draw the attention of other heads of states to lessons of COVID-19 pandemic and need to strengthen future resilience. He will highlight sustainability, climate and human rights issues and urge the United Nations to improve its efficiency to be able to address the modern-day challenges.
During the UN General Assembly, presidents of all three Baltic countries will meet with UN Secretary-General António Manoel de Oliveira Guterres and President of Poland Andrzej Sebastian Duda.
In addition, President Levits will also have several bilateral meetings: with President of Sri Lanka Gotabaya Rajapaksa, Prime Minister of Georgia Irakli Garibashvili and other leaders.
President will take part in a discussion about the Three Seas Initiative organised by Atlantic Council (a think tank).
While in the United States on a working visit, Egils Levits will go to the State of Michigan. He will discuss the global role of the European Union with students and professors of the University of Michigan, visit the Michigan National Guard and honour the fallen soldier, and meet with the Governor of the State of Michigan Gretchen Whitmer.
Egils Levits will also meet with Latvian diaspora from New Jersey and Detroit.
He will also give interviews to several international media during his US visit.
Egils Levits will be accompanied by his wife Mrs Andra Levite. The First Lady will meet with Latvians living in the US and working in healthcare, science, education, and representatives of UN Women, an organisation empowering women.
