On 30 August, President of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs will attend an event in honour of the 30th anniversary of the final withdrawal of the occupation army of the Russian Federation from the Republic of Latvia.

30 years ago, on 31 August 1994, the occupation army of the Russian Federation as the legal successor of the USSR left the territory of Latvia. In 1991, immediately after the restoration of the independence of the Republic of Latvia, one of the first decisions adopted by the parliament of Latvia was to demand the removal of the occupation army. At that time, Latvia’s main foreign policy task was to safeguard the independence and security of the restored state. One of the most important and most difficult tasks was to achieve the full withdrawal from Latvia of all armed forces of the Soviet occupation regime. The removal of the occupation army opened the door to Latvia’s integration into international organisations, including the European Union and NATO.

Former officials who were in office at that time will attend the event: diplomats and representatives of the defence and interior sector who greatly contributed to the removal of the occupation army of the Russian Federation from the territory of Latvia.
