As of 26 August 2024, Ilze Milta is the National Security Advisor to the President of Latvia, Edgars Rinkēvičs, and Secretary of the National Security Council.
Ilze Milta began her career in the foreign service in 2001. Having served in diplomatic service for more than 20 years, Ms Milta has held various positions within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia, both at the central office in Riga and abroad. In 2016, Ms Milta served as Director of the Security Policy Department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, while from 2011 until 2015 she represented Latvia on the NATO Political and Partnership Committee. From 2015 until 2016, Ms Milta was Latvia’s representative in the Russia and Ukraine Unit of the Political Affairs and Security Policy Division of the NATO International Staff. From 1 September 2020, Ms Milta served as the Deputy Permanent Representative at the Permanent Representation of Latvia to NATO in Brussels, Belgium.
Ms Milta holds a Master’s Degree in International Politics from the Diplomatic School of Brussels. She speaks Latvian, English, Russian and French.
For her merits on behalf of the state of Latvia and her contribution in organising the NATO Summit of Heads of State and Government in Riga, Ms Milta has been bestowed with the Medal of Honour of the Cross of Recognition, while for her contribution to the work of the Foreign Service of Latvia and shaping Latvia’s foreign policy Ms Milta received a Letter of Recognition of the Cabinet of Ministers in 2022.
