US Vice President Joe Biden is planning to visit Latvia by the end of summer according to his notice to President of Latvia RaimondsVējonis during their telephone conversation on Wednesday, July 6.

 

Raimonds Vējonis and Joe Biden discussed the upcoming NATO summit this week, where decisions would be made on increasing the allied forces in the Member States of the Eastern flank.

 

“Current US military presence in the region has contributed to the increasing investments by the allies. Thanks to it, there is intention to decide in Warsaw on deployment of a multinational NATO battalion in the Baltic States and Poland,” indicated the President of Latvia.

 

Joe Biden confirmed Washington's unwavering commitment to extend security assurances pursuant to Article 5 of the NATO Founding Treaty to Latvia. US Vice President stressed that the significant increase in US military forces in Eastern Europe would strengthen defence of the Baltic States and improve NATO's deterrence capability significantly.
