Raimonds Vējonis
During the meeting with US Senator Tom Cotton, President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis appreciated the US decision to deepen cooperation with the Baltic States in the field of security and its strong commitment to meet Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty.

“Confirmation from the Senator representing the Republican Party is significant for us that the United States consider security of the Baltic States and Poland as extremely important for the entire whole Alliance. Statement of Senator Cotton that the US Government will adhere to the commitments undertaken within the framework of NATO and will participate in strengthening national defence of the allied member states regardless of the outcome of the upcoming presidential election is a proof thereto," emphasized the President of Latvia.

During the conversation with Senator Cotton, Raimonds Vējonis stated that the presence of the United States in the Baltic region had both deeply symbolic and practical significance. Therefore, current joint actions should be intensified like joint military exercises, visits of different levels, and successful cooperation with the Michigan National Guard.

He stressed that the United States was the backbone of NATO and the strategic partner for Latvia. The President of Latvia reiterated that Latvia was committed to fulfil its obligations to the NATO and our allies on increasing the defence spending to 2 percent of GDP already starting from 2018 onwards. At the same time, Latvia should work on strengthening internal security, including securing the eastern border.

T. Cotton represents the state of Arkansas in the US Senate and was elected from the Republican Party.
