Consultations with all political parties elected to the 14th Saeima took place at the Riga Castle on 21-23 August 2023. Purpose of these consultations was to find out and discuss the position of political parties on potential composition of the ruling coalition, potential candidates for the position of prime minister and long-term and immediate government priorities that I identified on 17 August.
During these consultations, five political groups represented in the current Saeima (the New Unity, Union of Greens and Farmers, the United List – Latvian Green Party, Latvian Regional Alliance, Liepāja Party, National Alliance "All for Latvia!" – For Fatherland and Freedom/LNNK, Progressives) expressed their overall support for national development priorities and list of immediate interventions identified by me.
Given the political stance and previous parliamentary track record of these political parties, I am certain that the new cabinet must be built upon the broadest possible majority support of the parliament. Such government composition would be most suitable and capable of delivering on a number of specific issues important for the society of Latvia. On top of medium and long-term priorities identified by me, the new government should also start working on the 2024 budget as soon as it is ready.
I have therefore invited representatives of the New Unity, Union of Greens and Farmers, the United List – Latvian Green Party, Latvian Regional Alliance, Liepāja Party, National Alliance "All for Latvia!" – For Fatherland and Freedom/LNNK, and Progressives to the Riga Castle tomorrow, on 23 August, at 15:00, for further discussions.
