Undertaking the duties of a coordinating country for Baltic and Nordic cooperation in the NB8 format this year, Latvia prioritizes cooperation in the field of defence and security, strategic communications, cyber security, energy security, and the Eastern Partnership this year. In this format, co-operation with regional partner Finland will be important, which takes over the management of the Nordic Council of Ministers this year. President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis stressed that at a meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Finland Timo Soini on Wednesday, January 13.

 

The officials discussed the migration crisis in Europe, the global threat of terrorism and the situation in Ukraine, stressing that maintaining a common stance and solidarity was significant for the European countries in the face of new common challenges. Raimonds Vējonis added that many security risks were common to all Baltic and Nordic countries, so strengthening their partnership was very essential.

 

When mentioning operation of several Finnish enterprises in Latvia, the President of Latvia appreciated the Finnish investment in Latvia and opportunities to further deepen cooperation in this field. Timo Soini welcomed the excellent bilateral relations, pointing out that strengthening cooperation in the field of security was among the most important tasks in the Baltic and Nordic region.
