At the beginning of the meeting, the President of Latvia stressed that the tournament was very special this year because it was taking place in the year marking the centenary of the statehood of the Baltic States.
“This tournament affirms that Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia share a sporting competition and a sense of unity. It is a pleasure that the Baltic athletes achieve high results. Your success, both individual and team-wise, is recorded in the sports history of our countries and is an example for our new athletes,” stated the President of Latvia at the ceremonial occasion.
Raimonds Vējonis awarded the President’s Cup in Athletics to 200-meter runner Gunta Vaičule for her individual top score among women and javelin thrower Magnus Kirt (Estonia) for his individual top score among men. In their turn, the Lithuanian national team won the President’s Cup as top scorer among the national teams as well as in the competition among men, and among women.
The tournament for the President’s Cup in Athletics was held for the 24th time from 15 to 16 June 2018 in the Ogre Sports Center Stadium in Ogre. The President of Latvia extended his gratitude to the Valmiera City Municipality and the Ogre Regional Government, as well as the Latvian Athletics Association for their contribution in organising the tournament.
