On 9 May, the Day of Remembrance of Victims of Russian-Ukrainian War, at 12:00-13:30pm, Riga Castle will host a discussion about the on-going and future efforts to help Ukraine, legal assessment of Russian aggression against Ukraine from the perspective of international law, political, criminal law and international law tools that can be utilised to restore the rule of law and justice.

As various NATO and European Union countries, including Latvia, continue to provide all kinds of support to Ukraine, international organisations and individual countries are turning closer attention to crimes committed by Russia and several claims have already reached international tribunals. But Ukraine will need further support in coming years to be able to defend itself against the aggressor, as well as join European Union and rebuild itself after the devastating war.

These are the topics that will be at the focus of discussion ‘War in Ukraine. Restoring justice and international law. Holding Russia accountable’. List of distinguished participants included President of Latvia Egils Levits, Executive Vice-President of European Commission Valdis Dombrovskis, attorney-at-law Jūlija Jerņeva, Parliamentary Secretary of Ministry of Justice Ilona Kronberga, judge of General Court of Court of Justice of the European Union Ingrīda Labucka (2004−2020), Representative of Latvia before International Human Rights Organisations Kristīne Līce and Prosecutor General Juris Stukāns. Discussion will be moderated by Head of the Office of the Presidential Advisers Sarmīte Ēlerte.
