“Working together is crucial for all three Baltic States especially in today’s rapidly changing environment. It is important to strengthen cooperation on security, energy, and joint projects of infrastructure development like Rail Baltica,” emphasised President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis.
During his conversation with the Prime Minister of Estonia, the President of Latvia noted a shared vision on strengthening the regional security that both countries shared. The officials agreed that providing that defence spending would be 2% of gross domestic product was very significant for the NATO Member States, and Estonia had already reached this goal, whereas Latvia would reach the target in 2018.
“We highly appreciate the decisions taken at the NATO Summit in Warsaw on the deployment of the NATO multinational battalions in the Baltic States and Poland being a solid basis for security of the region,” mentioned Raimonds Vējonis.
The President of Latvia welcomed the priorities set for the Estonian Presidency of the Council of the European Union: development of EU digital market and strengthening of cooperation with the EU Eastern Partnership countries. We have achieved real progress in the development of cross-border digital services in the Baltic countries, but there is still much to be done. The recent EU initiatives on the development of digital market will provide additional chances for development of cross-border services both in our region and in the EU.
