They discussed cooperation between the two countries in security matters, as well as the implementation of significant cultural projects while preparing for the centenary of Latvia.
Raimonds Vējonis invited H.M. Queen Margrethe II to visit Latvia next year, when the centenary celebrations will be held in Latvia. “Denmark’s support was very essential, when Latvia regained its independence and became a Member State of the European and Transatlantic Organisations. We will always remember your visit to Riga 25 years ago, which was the first visit of any royalty to Latvia after the restoration of its independence,” stated Raimonds Vējonis.
During the meeting with Prime Minister of Denmark Lars Lekke Rasmussen, the officials discussed the issues concerning the future of the European Union and Brexit, the growth of bilateral economic relations and cooperation in security matters, including in the face of hybrid threat. “Latvia appreciates the contribution of Denmark to the multinational NATO forces in the Baltic States and the air patrolling,” said the President of Latvia.
While paying a visit, Raimonds Vējonis visited the Antvorskov Army Barracks and met with the Latvian soldiers on Monday, who were preparing to participate integrated into the Danish contingent in the international military operation in Iraq targeted at terrorist organisation Daesh. Six Latvian soldiers will go on a six-month mission to Iraq in late July, where they will train the Iraqi security forces in combating terrorists.
Within the framework of the visit of the President of Latvia, a Memorandum of Understanding on cooperation directions in creative industries was signed between the Ministries of Culture of Latvia and Denmark. Among other things, the Memorandum of Understanding provides for cooperation in implementation of the project Tobacco Factory, which is one of the international projects in the cultural programme of the Centenary of Latvia. “Creativity is important in every area of our lives. Being creative, we can develop stable long-term economic and business ties,” indicated the President of Latvia.
In Copenhagen, Raimonds Vējonis also met with representatives of the Latvian diaspora in Denmark and invited them to participate actively in organising the events dedicated to the Centenary of Latvia.
