Today, President of Latvia Egils Levits had a remote meeting with the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Meeting between the presidents of two states concluded with the signing of a joint declaration on further integration of Ukraine into the European Union (EU).
According to declaration, Republic of Latvia will support Ukraine when Ukraine is ready to apply for membership of the EU in the future. Both countries have agreed to strengthen joint efforts in supporting the integration of Ukraine with the EU and implementing reforms in Ukraine in order to achieve EU membership perspective.
President of Latvia reiterated Latvia’s unwavering support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity: ‘Latvia keeps constantly reminding international community that parts of Ukraine are still occupied. We use every opportunity we have to emphasise that Crimea is an integral part of Ukraine, just like Donbas region.’
‘Latvia is ready to provide its experts who can help Ukraine implement needed reforms and continue its path to European integration. I truly hope that Ukraine will become a full-fledged EU member state by the end of the decade after completing all necessary reforms,’ said President Levits.
Egils Levits also expressed his support to Ukraine’s aspirations to strengthen the European Union security by joining NATO.
President Zelenskyy thanked Mr Levits for Latvia’s consistent support to Ukraine and readiness to assist Ukraine in completing reforms required to achieve EU membership perspective. Mr Zelenskyy congratulated his Latvian counterpart and the whole Latvian nation on the recent Restoration of Independence Day on 4 May. He invited Latvian president to visit Ukraine and join the celebrations of 30th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence on 23-24 August in Kyiv, as well as attend the founding of Crimea platform. Platform will unite countries that are ready to constantly remind international community of the Crimean situation.
