Raimonds Vējonis
On Thursday, February 9, President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis and Federal President of Germany Joachim Gauck took part in the opening ceremony of the Reformation Square and the memorial plaque marking the 500th anniversary of the Reformation.

 

President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis expressed the hope that the developments related to the 500th anniversary of the Reformation will bring new opportunities for Latvia and Germany for cooperation in culture and science.

 

During the ceremony, the President of Latvia presented a gift to the Federal President of Germany, a digital copy of the epistle by Martin Luther addressed to Riga and Livonia.

 

Raimonds Vējonis highlighted that these writings have been considered a unique and valuable relics and a significant evidence of Luther’s personal connection with the Reformation in the Baltic States.

 

The gift for the Federal President of Germany has been prepared in cooperation with the Latvian National Library.
