Presidents of both countries expressed their support for decisions adopted by the European Council during yesterday’s extraordinary meeting on personal sanctions against Belarusian officials who authorised persecution of members of the public or falsified election results, as well as urging Belarus to stop violence against opposition, release all detained demonstrators and hold new and fair elections with equal participation of all candidates and election observers.
Egils Levits and Frank-Walter Steinmeier agreed to hold more detailed consultations during a meeting in Berlin next Friday.
