During the meeting, attention was paid to creation of cooperation with the new administration of the United States of America. Raimonds Vējonis and Kersti Kaljulaid agreed that it was too early to predict how the relations of the Baltic States and other European countries would develop with the newly elected US President, Donald Trump, before the composition of his team is known, but there was reason to believe that the United States would meet its international commitments.
“The decisions made at the NATO Summit in Warsaw this summer to deploy multinational NATO battalions in the Baltic States and Poland are a solid basis for believing that the strengthening of global security will remain a priority for the US,” indicated Raimonds Vējonis.
The Presidents of Latvia and Estonia discussed bilateral cooperation in strengthening security within the NATO. They stressed that it was essential for the NATO member states to ensure that their defense spending reached 2% of GDP.
Raimonds Vējonis and Kersti Kaljulaid also agreed to strengthen economic cooperation between Latvia and Estonia, having noted that a production site of the company “Latvijas Finieris” opened in Estonia on Tuesday was a proof that investment projects contributed significantly to mutual practical cooperation between the neighbouring countries.
