On 18 January in Davos, President of Latvia Egils Levits held a meeting with President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliev to discuss the geopolitical situation and topical issues in the energy sector.
The two presidents welcomed the good relations between Latvia and Azerbaijan and the close political dialogue, including within the framework of the EU-Azerbaijan dialogue.
Discussing the security situation in Europe, both sides condemned Russia's waging of hostilities in Ukraine as a flagrant violation of international law and confirmed that support to Ukraine should continue as intensively as before in economic, political and military terms.
The two sides also discussed international security issues within the framework of the UN.
The President of Latvia inquired about stability in the South Caucasus and the development of energy infrastructure in this region.
This was the first meeting between the two presidents, and Mr Aliev expressed his hope to welcome the President of Latvia on a visit to Azerbaijan.
