During the meeting, the presidents of the Baltic states discussed regional security issues, future support for Ukraine, the situation in Georgia, transatlantic relations and the cooperation of the Baltic states to date in formats such as the Baltic Council of Ministers, the Three Seas Initiative, infrastructure and energy projects.
Addressing the participants of the meeting, the President of Latvia expressed his conviction that the Baltic states had made significant decisions to increase energy security by reducing reliance on Russian energy resources. E. Rinkēvičs expressed satisfaction that the Baltic states' synchronisation efforts with Europe are on schedule. These decisions represent a significant step towards enhancing regional energy security and competitiveness.
In terms of regional security, the President believes that Russia would remain the most serious and immediate threat to Euro-Atlantic security in the near future. Therefore, the primary focus now is on ensuring the readiness of NATO forces and capabilities and the need for NATO's European allies to move together towards a defence investment of 2.5% and above. This is in line with the approach already taken by the three Baltic states, which have set an example for other NATO members.
"I am confident that the United States will continue to be a strategic partner, which is the cornerstone of transatlantic cooperation and NATO," E. Rinkēvičs said. At the same time, everyone must work towards a robust defence sector and the minimisation of supply chains across the NATO Alliance.
During the meeting, the President of Latvia reiterated that Ukraine is our first line of defence. Ukraine needs the support of all NATO members. No discussion on Ukraine's future is acceptable without Ukraine.
The situation in Georgia was also discussed. E. Rinkēvičs stated that the Baltic states should demonstrate solidarity with the people of Georgia to pursue justice and restore Georgia's future European Union membership prospects. The violent repression of peaceful protesters by the Georgian law enforcement authorities is unacceptable.
The meeting adopted a joint statement by the Presidents of the Baltic states.
