Raimonds Vējonis
In order to discuss current issues in the country, President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis met with Prime Minister Māris Kučinskis on Tuesday, February 16. During the meeting, officials focused on the agenda of the Cabinet of Ministers and the forthcoming discussions in the European Council.

 

“The new government shall work to its full potential from the very first day," said President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis and called on Māris Kučinskis to draw up an action plan in the nearest future in order to achieve the objections stipulated in the declaration of government. Although the action plan may be drafted even in three months, the officials agreed that this work should be done in a shorter period of time.

 

Discussing the agenda of the meeting of the European Council on February 18 and 19, the President of Latvia noted that the proposals drafted by President of European Council Donald Tusk for a new agreement to be reached with the United Kingdom was a step in the right direction and good basis for further work. “Latvia is interested in reaching an agreement with the United Kingdom, which would maintain the principle of free movement of labour,” stressed the President of Latvia.

 

Regarding the issue of migration policies and possible further steps in resolving the refugee crisis, the President of Latvia called to support such measures mainly, which were aimed at strengthening of external borders of the European Union and improving border control, and efficient return mechanisms.
