On 19 September, during the 78th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, President Edgars Rinkēvičs met with the President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu to discuss bilateral cooperation between the two countries, Russian aggression in Ukraine and cooperation in international organisations.
During the meeting, President Rinkēvičs confirmed Latvia's interest to continue cooperation with Moldova in development cooperation projects and welcomed Moldova's resilience in the face of Russia's hybrid threat against Moldova.
During the conversation, E. Rinkēvičs drew attention to Latvia's support for the launch of European Union accession negotiations with Moldova already this year. The President welcomed Moldova's cooperation with Ukraine in ensuring the transport of grain to the EU. E. Rinkēvičs called on Moldova to comply with the EU sanctions regulation, thus preventing Russia’s efforts to circumvent the sanctions regime.
