On 9 October, President Edgars Rinkēvičs met with the Minister of Defence Andris Sprūds at Riga Castle to discuss current national security and defence issues.

During the meeting, President Rinkēvičs listened to the information provided by the Minister of Defence on the priorities and objectives set in the field of national defence and security. "The Saeima expressed its full support for the Latvian National Defence Concept, which makes it a great responsibility to work on the implementation of the tasks specified in the concept. Targeted work and efficient use of resources are essential for our defence and deterrence capabilities and for public confidence in our security. As the National Defence Service continues to expand, it is important to maintain its attractiveness to young people and its effectiveness for the military training of Latvian citizens. The high readiness of the Latvian Armed Forces, the necessary stocks, the presence of allies and the joint action of NATO are the basis for the security of Latvia and the region," said E. Rinkēvičs. At the same time, President Rinkēvičs expressed his support for the introduction of national defence education as planned, i.e., from 1 September 2024.

The officials discussed Latvia's further military support to Ukraine in the fight against Russian aggression. They also expressed support for Israel and its right to self-defence. President Rinkēvičs was briefed by the Minister of Defence on the conditions of service of Latvian soldiers currently participating in the United Nations International Mission in Israel and the operation in Lebanon.

During the meeting, the parties also discussed progress in the development of air defence capabilities and the upcoming NATO Defence Ministers' meeting.
