On 19 September, during the 78th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, President Edgars Rinkēvičs met with President of Angola João Lourenço to discuss bilateral relations between the two countries, Russian aggression in Ukraine and cooperation in international organisations.
President Rinkēvičs highly appreciated the engagement of the Angolan leadership in the prevention of various regional conflicts.
During the meeting, E. Rinkēvičs confirmed Latvia's interest in deepening political dialogue with Angola. "As a member state of the European Union, Latvia welcomes the current active dialogue between the European Union and the African Union. I see cooperation in the field of education at the bilateral level between our countries," said E. Rinkēvičs.
During the conversation, the President of Latvia called on Angola to support Ukraine's peace initiative.
President Rinkēvičs drew attention to the fact that Latvia is running for the first time for the United Nations Security Council in the 2025 elections. "Latvia sees potential for closer cooperation in multilateral fora, and we support the United Nations-African Union partnership on peacebuilding. Latvia paid special attention to these issues when it was elected to the UN Peacebuilding Commission in 2022," emphasised E. Rinkēvičs.
