On January 8, President Edgars Rinkēvičs met with the Ombudsman of the Republic of Latvia Juris Jansons at the Riga Castle. During the meeting, the parties discussed children's rights legislation, as well as a range of civil and social rights issues.
"The work of the Ombudsman in monitoring respect for human rights and adherence to the principle of good governance as well as in educating society, strengthens the overall rule of law and justice in the country," said the President of Latvia.
The President of Latvia was briefed by the Ombudsman on the planned work, topical issues, and thematic priorities for 2024. E. Rinkēvičs appreciated the Ombudsman Office’s support for the President's legislative initiative regarding the requirement for local municipal leaders to attain security clearances as well as the initiative concerning security in schools. He also called for the application of schools' right to search pupils' personal belongings in case of potential immediate threat to security.
