The Council of the European Union (EU) approved Gatis Doniks as Latvia’s representative in the European Public Prosecutor's Office (EPPO) on 27 July. Gatis Doniks will start working as the full time European prosecutor in Luxembourg on 1 September. Gatis Doniks is appointed to the position of the European prosecutor for the term of six years with possible extension for another three years by the Council of the EU.
Before joining EPPO, Gatis Doniks worked in Methodology Division of the Department of Analysis and Management of the Prosecutor General’s Office where he works since 2001. Gatis Doniks was part of European Union’s External Action Service’s European Union Advisory Mission Ukraine Prosecution/Judiciary Unit from 2016 to 2019 and was promoted to the position of the head of the unit. Mr Doniks’ responsibilities in Ukraine included management and coordination of joint activities of Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine (PGO) and international partners. These activities were part of structural reforms and strategic management capacity building at the Ukrainian PGO. Gatis Doniks also developed and implemented new approaches that boosted the efficiency of fight against organised financial crime. He has also been temporary expert of United Nations on prosecution and expert of the Council of the European Union Working Party on Cooperation in Criminal Matters (COPEN).
The European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) is the first independent supranational prosecutor’s office with the competence to investigate, prosecute and bring to judgment crimes against the EU budget. It has investigative and prosecuting powers in 22 participating EU member states.
