Raimonds Vējonis
President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis will participate in the 11th Asia - Europe Meeting (ASEM) in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, from 13 to 17 July 2016. It will host discussions of Heads of State and Heads of Government on closer political, economic, and cultural cooperation between European and Asian countries.

 

One intends to discuss cooperation in transport and logistics in details at the Summit. Latvia has set forth attraction of transit cargoes from the Asian region among its priorities; therefore, the President of Latvia plans to discuss the issues of transport and logistics both in the framework of the Summit and during potential bilateral meetings.

 

This year will mark the 20th anniversary of ASEM Summit by bringing 51 European and Asian Head of State and Head of Government, as well as the EU's top officials – President of EU Council Donald Tusk and President of European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker together.

 

At the Summit titled "Building on 20 years of ASEM: Expanding Connectivity and Inclusion" one plans to evaluate the progress reached in 20 years in the area of politics, economics, social matters, culture, and human communications. It is planned to discuss aspects of connectivity between Asia and Europe, working methods, future prospects, and to discuss on climate change, sustainable development, multilateral trading system, disaster prevention and management, energy security, food safety, and other issues.

 

ASEM is established in 1996 as the Asia-Europe forum for dialogue and cooperation. ASEM leaders meet for the summit every second year to identify priorities for ASEM. These summits are held alternately in Asia and Europe.
