On 18 June, President Edgars Rinkēvičs visited Latvia's eastern border and the State Border Guard units in Latgale—Grebņevas and Šķaunes Border Guard posts.
During the visit, the President of Latvia observed the progress in fence construction and was briefed on the security situation on the Latvian-Russian and Latvian-Belarusian borders. "We see impressive progress that has been made in the construction of the fence on the eastern border. I thank all those involved, including the State Border Guard, the National Armed Forces, and the State Real Estate. A great deal of work has been accomplished thus far. I would like to extend special gratitude to the State Border Guard and all the officials of the state institutions involved in protecting the national border and working overtime for an extended period," said E. Rinkēvičs.
The President of Latvia placed particular emphasis on the role of the National Armed Forces in securing the country's eastern border. "I am grateful for the National Armed Forces' contribution towards the strengthening of the eastern border. One of the key tasks ahead is the reinforcement of the eastern border through added military capabilities and the deployment of anti-mobility infrastructure," noted E. Rinkēvičs.
The President assured that he would regularly visit the border area and actively monitor the development of the military infrastructure.
During his visit, President Rinkēvičs also emphasised the importance of securing a stable salary increase for the employees of the interior sector, and especially border guards.
