On 7 June, President Edgars Rinkēvičs paid his 24th regional working visit to Smiltene region. At the beginning of the visit, the President of Latvia met with the leadership of Smiltene municipality and visited the multifunctional social service centre "Īve", where he met with representatives of the association "Cerību spārni". During his visit to Smiltene, President Rinkēvičs got acquainted with the daily operations of local entrepreneurs. He visited the dairy processing company "Smiltenes piens", the fruit-growing company "Very Berry" and the retail store chain "Top!". At the conclusion of his working visit, the President of Latvia met with the residents of Smiltene region at Smiltene High School.
"What we have heard in the Smiltene region confirms once again that access to housing and finance is critical factor for the further development of economically robust regions. While both issues are already on the government's agenda, tangible outcomes are required. After today's visit, I have seen for myself that the slogan of the municipality – “In Smiltene, we make it work!" – rings true. The municipality has manufacturing and exporting companies that are actively engaged in the improvement of their surroundings and in the social life of the region. The Smiltene Social Services Centre is an excellent example of the potential of modern infrastructure and services to enhance opportunities for all social groups and successful cooperation between the municipality and the non-governmental sector. In general, I am pleased with the high economic activity and the balanced development of the entire municipality," said President Edgars Rinkēvičs after his working visit.
During his working visit, the President of Latvia visited the Smiltene Church, which has undergone renovation with the support of the local entrepreneurs.
