President of Latvia Egils Levits condemns Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. ‘International community must give a strong response. NATO will defend the alliance and its values. We will stand by Ukrainian people. Ukrainians are ready to engage with aggressor and defend their land. We must take action to show our stance on such shameless attack on another independent nation. We fully support Ukraine. Baltic countries and Poland have requested consultations on further NATO response based on Article 4 of NATO Treaty.’
President of Latvia described Russia’s attempts to justify its actions by Article 51 of the UN Charter as cynical: ‘The world sees that it is Russia that has launched the attack. No one can take such justification of criminal act seriously. Russia needs to be isolated from the rest of the world!’
President of Latvia is fully confident that Latvia does not face any immediate threats right now: ‘we rely on Article 5 of NATO, which says that attack against one Ally is considered as an attack against all 30 NATO Allies. We count on solidarity of NATO member countries and will not hesitate to extend our solidarity to any other Ally’.
Tomorrow, on 25 February, President of Latvia Egils Levits will travel to Warsaw for the meeting of NATO Eastern Flank (B9 or Bucharest Nine) heads of state from Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Lithuania, Poland, Romania and Slovakia. B9 leaders will focus on Russian aggression against Ukraine and further strengthening security along the Eastern Flank of NATO.
