On 26 April, President of Latvia Egils Levits met with Auditor General of the Republic of Latvia Rolands Irklis at the Riga Castle to discuss the achievements of the State Audit Office under the leadership of Mr Irklis and scheduled audit plans.
President of Latvia underlined that he welcomes Office’s idea to create a compilation of audit findings that describe typical mistakes of crisis management decisions, for instance, to make valuable lessons about Covid-19 crisis management. President also noted that Latvia needs a dedicated crisis management framework that would allow government to handle various crises with greater efficiency and impact.
Auditor General Irklis noted that State Audit Office has started auditing government crisis support schemes. Both officials agreed that national social assistance system needs to be designed in a manner that ensures that benefits actually reach those who need them the most.
President and Auditor General discussed how to ensure that State Audit Office recommendations are contributing to better public sector performance in the long run.
Rolands Irklis became the head of the State Audit Office in early 2021.
