‘We need to protect those who have been forced to take temporary leave. On the other hand, we need to support viable businesses that will pull our economy out of the crisis,’ underlined President. President and Prime minister talked about ways of restoring economic stability after the crisis caused by the outbreak of the virus and Egils Levits mentioned the need to invest the loans secured by the government in the most meaningful way, supporting viable industries that are capable of returning the investment and fuelling economic growth. Vulnerable groups of society should be supported, too.
Egils Levits and Krišjānis Kariņš talked about the social benefits of an application for tracking and containment of the infection. Such software would make everyday restrictions softer. However, President and Prime Minister both raised concerns about the data privacy: application would use personal data and any attempts to use it for purposes other than virus containment7 should not be allowed.
President Levits and Prime Minister Kariņš also focused on parliamentary debate of the proposed regional reform. President mentioned that ‘it is vital to define the right scope of powers for each level of government to make sure local governments are capable to do their job and civic society can participate in local development’.
