On 8 August President Edgars Rinkēvičs visited the eastern border of Latvia and the State Border Guard units in Latgale - Krivanda Border Guard Unit, Opoļi Border Guard Unit and Robežnieki Border Guard Unit.
During the visit, the President of Latvia got acquainted with the situation on the border, the daily work of the border guards and the border infrastructure, as well as discussed issues related to the security of the country and the region and strengthening of the border.
"Today I had the opportunity to get acquainted with the daily work of the State Border Guard and the difficulties that our border guards face while guarding and serving at the eastern border of Latvia. I would like to thank the Latvian state border guards for their professional work. At the same time, I am convinced that the current policy of penalties for those involved in organising illegal migration is too lenient. There is also an unforgivable delay in the construction of the eastern border of our country, therefore, I expect active action from all responsible institutions and I will regularly raise this issue with the responsible officials," emphasised President E. Rinkēvičs.
Latvia's eastern border is also the external border of the European Union and NATO with Russia and Belarus.
