The President of Latvia emphasized Latvia and the United Kingdom should remain good partners after the referendum on the UK's withdrawal from the European Union (EU) as well. “The current bilateral cooperation in trade and business is significant for both parties,” stressed Raimonds Vējonis.
During his meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the United Kingdom, Raimonds Vējonis called on the British authorities repeatedly to ensure that status of EU citizens residing in the UK would not be affected after the referendum on withdrawal from the EU and to have a strong stance against any manifestation of intolerance against Latvian nationals in Great Britain.
During the conversation, the President of Latvia also noted that the information policy of Russian government was focused on cleavage of the Euro-Atlantic unity; therefore, the European Union and the NATO should develop closer cooperation in order to mitigate those threats. Content monitoring, preventing hate speech, incitement to hatred among different communities, the calling for violence, the abuse of the EU's cross-border broadcasting, increasing professionalism of media, and improving critical thinking of the audiences were the main challenges in this area, said the President of Latvia.
During official visit of the President of Latvia to the UK, Raimonds Vējonis had an audience at Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, a meeting with Madam Speaker of the UK House of Lords Baroness D'Souza and Speaker of the UK House of Commons John Bercow, as well as meetings with representatives of the Latvian community. Today, the President of Latvia also will acquaint with the Headquarters of NATO Allied Rapid Reaction Corps.
