Raimonds Vējonis
“Strong mass media play a very important role in a democratic society,” underlined President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis during his meeting with the First Vice-President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans in the Riga Castle on Friday. The President of Latvia pointed out that improving the financial situation of high-quality media and avoiding confusion about media ownership were vital for populations being provided with objective information about the events taking place in the community. Therefore, a new regulation might be needed in this area.

During the meeting with the Vice-President of the European Commission, Raimonds Vējonis informed about the reform process in Latvia, which received a high rating by OECD recently. “I hope that this will be an impetus for completing the ongoing reforms in education and healthcare, as well as the transition to more efficient public administration. Implementing the already adopted improvements in justice is of equal significance,” stated the President of Latvia.

The officials agreed that one required an active debate on the future of the European Union. “Europe must be united with no division lines and no significant differences among the individual EU Member States. It is important to act and be a part of an active Europe,” indicated Raimonds Vējonis.
