Raimonds Vējonis
The countries of the world should tackle the refugee crisis in solidarity, because it was not only European but also global responsibility, said President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis in his address at the opening of the United Nations (UN) Summit “Large Movements of Refugees and Migrants”' on September 19.

Raimonds Vējonis also noted that it required strengthening the reception capacities in the countries close to home countries of refugees so that they could host more refugees by providing those countries with all necessary assistance.

In his address, President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis stressed contribution of Latvia as a part of international community to the efforts in addressing the root causes of the crisis. Latvia has and will continue to support efforts to strengthen the United Nations refugee response system. One recent example is Latvia’s contribution to the assistance fund for the Syrian Regional Response Plan of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and the World Food Programme.

Latvia is working with other European Union Member States to develop and implement a common EU policy on resettlement and humanitarian admission.

President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis is on the working visit in the USA from September 18 to September 25, where he participates in the 71st session of the UN General Assembly.
