On 2 March, at 6:00pm, upon the call of Latvian Association of Local and Regional Governments (LALRG), several Latvian municipalities held protests against invasion of Ukraine in solidarity with the Ukrainian people, condemning the Russian invasion and military aggression against Ukraine.
Video message of President Levits to participants of Ukraine support protests
Fellow Latvians, dear friends,
Our minds and hearts are occupied by what is happening in Ukraine, and with Ukrainian people, these days, as they courageously continue to defend their national independence.
Russia has cynically and brutally violated the provisions and principles of international law. Russia is trying to drag all of us back into past where everything is decided by the size of the appetite of superpowers. A brute force that crushes all rights. And the answer to this is very clear and straight forward: we will not compromise with aggressor, there is no way in which it would be acceptable. Aggressor must be stopped!
Ukraine is not alone right now. Russia’s war against Ukraine has been condemned by the rest of the world. Ukraine is getting the help, weapons and support it needs. Europe and West are united in their response to the aggressor.
I want to thank every patriotic Latvian who has chosen not to be indifferent and help Ukraine and its people. I also want to thank municipalities for coordinating such assistance.
Our message is clear: we want free and prosperous Ukraine by our side in Europe. Humanity and reason must prevail!
Glory to Ukraine!
