On August 26, President of Latvia Egils Levits met with Chairperson of the Free Trade Union Confederation of Latvia Egils Baldzēns and representatives of member organisations in the Riga Castle to discuss issues of importance to employees and trade unions in Latvia.
The meeting focused on the quality and availability of healthcare and education services, the competitiveness of the sectoral remuneration system in the Baltics and Europe, the reduction of inequality in the society, the significance of industries and industrial production in the Latvian economy, the role of social dialogue and social partners in providing sustainable development.
President of Latvia Egils Levits stressed that trade unions were an essential part of the national economy and that it was, therefore, necessary to popularise membership in trade union more to strengthen the position of trade unions and the significance of social dialogue.
