"The State Security Service carries out active counter-intelligence work to counter pro-Kremlin and anti-government activities. Our country's first line of defence consists of Latvian security institutions, whose main task is to anticipate and prevent threats to national security in cooperation with NATO and European Union security institutions. This is particularly important in today's geopolitical environment", said President Edgars Rinkēvičs at the opening ceremony of the new VDD building.
Further information:
The VDD is one of Latvia's three security institutions - counter-intelligence and internal security service, which operates under the supervision of the Minister of the Interior and performs tasks within their statutory competence.
To develop and successfully counter new threats, the Service has had to recruit additional staff and develop its operational capabilities. The expansion of the VDD and its activities was one of the main reasons why the Service needed a new, larger and more modern building, built and equipped to meet the highest information protection and physical security requirements of NATO and European Union security institutions.
