On 20 July, President of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs met with President of Costa Rica Rodrigo Chaves-Robles at the Riga Castle to discuss bilateral relations between the two countries, promote political dialogue and discuss economic cooperation and collaboration in international organisations.
President Rinkēvičs expressed his appreciation for Costa Rica's clear and unwavering support for Ukraine. 'We highly appreciate Costa Rica's firm position in condemning Russia's unprovoked and unjustified full-scale invasion of Ukraine and Costa Rica's continued support for Ukraine in international fora. Russia has trampled on international norms and irreversibly changed the strategic security environment - its use of military force against a sovereign state is unacceptable. The geopolitical, economic and humanitarian consequences of Russia's aggression are being felt throughout the world. Latvia will continue to support Ukraine and the right of every sovereign nation to determine its own future,' said E. Rinkēvičs.
During the meeting, the President of Latvia expressed interest in strengthening cooperation with Costa Rica as a like-minded partner in bilateral, regional and multilateral diplomacy. For example, cooperation in multilateral formats at the UN is essential to address issues such as climate change, the protection of democratic values and sustainable development.
During the meeting, E. Rinkēvičs welcomed the intensification of cooperation in the framework of the European Union (EU) – CELAC (Community of Latin American and Caribbean States) and EU-Central America Dialogue. This is a like-minded region that shares a common approach to a rules-based international order and offers mutually beneficial opportunities for trade.
