When meeting with the management and employees of the Supreme Court, the President of Latvia pointed out that a strong judicial power and a strong Supreme Court were the foundation of a strong country, because justice could not be ensured without a strong judicial power.
During the conversation, the President of Latvia acknowledged that the public had many questions about the quality of the work of the judicial system justly that the Supreme Court faced in its daily work as well. A large number of appeals suggests that the public does not trust the decisions made by a district, a city, and a region, therefore one must find the ways to promote public confidence in the decisions of the courts of the first instance or the court of appeal, including raising more awareness of judicial work.
Raimonds Vējonis admitted that the prestige of a judge’s profession should be improved because the court system would be strong only when the best specialists would choose the career of a judge. Judges must perfect themselves professionally, be open to change and new knowledge all the time. The President of Latvia also noted the need to strengthen the capacity of judicial staff and the need for the judges to clarify their decisions to the public more.
