At the Summit, a decision was made on in-depth collaboration in strategic sectors: economics, transport, energy, good governance and building institutional capacity, education, and mobility with specific objectives being set for cooperation in each of the areas mentioned above.
“It is crucial that citizens of the EU and of the Eastern Partnership countries clearly see that there are acutely needed reforms implemented in our partner countries, and as their economies develop, new opportunities are emerging, and the rule of law strengthens. We can further strengthen our cooperation with the Eastern Partnership countries only based on particular progress, and it will have great support,” stated Raimonds Vējonis. Latvia highlights the need for closer EU cooperation with those countries that have progressed more in reforming. “Reform efforts must be rewarded,” emphasised the President of Latvia.
He pointed out that Latvia has been actively involved in shaping the Eastern Partnership Policy since its establishment. Closer cooperation with the EU Eastern Partnership countries was a priority of the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the European Union. Latvia has accumulated significant experience in reforming, and Latvia shares its expertise in integrated border management, good governance, regional cooperation, transport and other areas.
“Latvia will continue its strong support for the implementation of the EU Association Agreement with Georgia, Moldova, and Ukraine, closer economic ties and visa liberalisation processes, thus contributing to the further approximation of partner countries to EU standards,” said Raimonds Vējonis.
