On 31 July President Edgars Rinkēvičs visited the State Border Guard Headquarters in Riga. During the visit, the President of Latvia got acquainted with the management and staff of the State Border Guard, and discussed the current situation at the state border and within the country.
The President of Latvia was updated on the progress of the construction of the state border infrastructure on the border between Latvia and Belarus, as well as on the border between Latvia and Russia. "I have decided to visit our Latvian border between Belarus and Russia on 8 August to see first-hand the current situation on the ground and to get acquainted with the progress of the construction of the border infrastructure. Given the security situation in our region, this is particularly important at the moment, as efforts to cross our country's external border illegally on a daily basis have continued unabated. I would also like to see on the ground the daily work and living conditions of the border guards, the technical equipment, and the challenges that our border guards face every day. I am convinced that only a strong Border Guard with professionals loyal to the state guarantees the resilience of our country," said President Rinkēvičs at the meeting.
The President emphasised the need for the State Border Guard to closely monitor and be ready to respond to possible provocations by the Russian group "Wagner".
