“Although the volume of trade between Latvia and Japan has increased in recent years, I consider that there is huge potential for greater bilateral economic cooperation. That can be facilitated by signing a convention for the avoidance of double taxation,” stressed President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis during accreditation of the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan Ms. Mariko Fujii on Tuesday, December 15.

 

During the meeting with the Ambassador of Japan, President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis called for strengthening economic co-operation in areas like logistics, IT, wood processing, pharmaceuticals, and tourism. He emphasized a rapid increase in the number of tourists from Japan in Latvia and invited to continue successful cooperation in the field of culture. The President of Latvia thanked the Ambassador for Japan's support to Latvia in its active and continuing negotiations on accession to the Organization of Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), which were currently in the final stage.

 

During the meeting with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Portugal Mr. José Júlio Pereira Gomes, President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis thanked for the active involvement of Portugal in the NATO operations as regards strengthening of the Baltic airspace. The support of the NATO Allies was very important given the current security situation in the region, as stressed the President of Latvia.

 

During the meeting, the President of Latvia said that Latvia considered Portugal as a path to such potential markets as Brazil and Angola based on close historical and economic ties of Portugal with those countries.

 

In its turn, during accreditation visit of the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Moldova Mr. Eugen Revenco, President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis emphasized Latvia’s commitment to continue supporting the reform process in Moldova by sharing its experience of European integration and by implementing development cooperation projects. “Latvia has always supported European aspirations of Moldova and will continue to do so,” said the President of Latvia.

 

During the meeting with the Ambassador, the President of Latvia pointed to the need to form a fully capable long-term government in Moldova as soon as possible, which would continue the implementation of the Association Agreement and the reform process. He also called for active work on reforms in the field of justice, anticorruption, and improvement of transparency in business and media environment.
