On 5 July, President of Latvia Egils Levits took part in Latvian Olympic Committee’s send-off ceremony and Tokyo 2020 national squad reveal prior to heading to Tokyo (Japan) for the XXXII Summer Olympics, which will take place from 23 July to 8 August.

Message of the President of Latvia Egils Levits:

‘Today we are sending our athletes to Tokyo Games where you, dear Olympians, will represent Latvia both individually and together as the National Team Latvia.

Olympic movement originated 2,000 years ago in the Hellenic or Greek world, which was only a part of our civilisation. Modern Olympic movement, revived in 1896, has reached a truly global scale. This is not some kind of capitalist globalisation. This is globalisation driven by humans. There are almost eight billion people living on this planet and everyone follows this truly uniting event in one way or another.

You belong to the world elite in your discipline and getting to that level requires a lot of effort and self-control. Therefore, Latvian Olympic Committee, coaches and everyone who has been with athletes on this road, deserve a big thank you. The eyes of everyone back home will be drawn to your performances in Tokyo, so you can count on at least two million fans supporting you, and I hope you will win the hearts of many more.

Good luck in Tokyo! We will keep our fingers crossed!’

Agnis Čavars, the captain of the National 3x3 Basketball Team, was announced the flag bearer for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Team Latvia who will carry the Latvian flag and lead the team at the Tokyo Olympics Opening Ceremony.

List of Olympic athletes on the Tokyo 2020 team currently includes 30 athletes in 14 different disciplines: 3x3 basketball, wrestling, judo, equestrian, karate,  modern pentathlon, swimming, beach volleyball, cycling (road and BMX), canoe/kayak, weightlifting,  shooting, tennis and athletics.
