On 18 January, President of Latvia Egils Levits visited the Ukrainian House in Davos, which serves as the reminder of Russia’s war crimes against Ukraine. He expressed condolences for the loss of Interior Minister Denys Monastyrsky and to the families of other victims killed in helicopter crash in Ukraine this morning.
President Levits went to the Ukrainian House to take part in a discussion about a special international tribunal for investigating Russian aggression against Ukraine. According to President, the tribunal should be tasked with investigating and prosecuting Russian Federation for its involvement in crimes of aggression against Ukraine because Ukraine and the rest of the world expect justice to be restored.
‘These crimes cannot go unpunished. It would weaken international laws that prohibit aggressions and wars of this kind. We must create a special tribunal. We should not hesitate at all. European Union member states should be the first to release common position in this regard,’ President Levits underlined.
Participants of the discussion also called for compensation and reparations to be paid by Russia for the damage caused to Ukraine. ‘Special international tribunal and other international partners should create an international body for the assessment of reparations. The special tribunal can be created under a resolution of the UN General Assembly or other legal frameworks created by like-minded countries,’ the President of Latvia suggested.
