Edgars Rinkēvičs
Valsts prezidents: nedrīkst pieļaut situāciju, ka Krievijas agresijas noziegums paliek nesodīts

On 14 February, on the margins of the Munich Security Conference, President Edgars Rinkēvičs met with the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Alain Berset.

During the meeting, the parties discussed key issues related to supporting Ukraine in its fight against Russian aggression and the urgent need to ensure the necessary mechanisms to hold Russia accountable without delay.

During the meeting, President Rinkēvičs expressed support for the establishment of a Special Tribunal within the framework of the Council of Europe to hold Russia accountable for its crime of aggression against Ukraine. "In the current geopolitical situation, it is crucial to actively continue efforts to establish the Special Tribunal to ensure that Russia is held responsible for its crime of aggression against Ukraine. We cannot allow a scenario in which Russia goes unpunished for its crimes. At the same time, it is important that the principles and mechanisms for the establishment of the tribunal are acceptable to Ukraine," emphasised the President of Latvia.

The meeting also addressed the next steps and measures needed to advance the creation of an international compensation mechanism, through the implementation of a Register of Damage to document the harm caused to Ukraine as a result of Russia’s aggression.
