On 11 October, President of Latvia Egils Levits met with justices of the Constitutional Court of Latvia to discuss its current priorities and strategic objectives. President Levits encouraged judges of the Constitutional Court to keep working to make Riga one of European hubs for constitutional thought.
President also praised the Court for its international cooperation efforts. ‘Constitutional Court has achieved two key milestones in past 26 years – it has made Satversme operational and become a respected member of the European family of constitutional courts. The standard of case-law has put our Constitutional Court among some of the most respected and revered constitutional courts in Europe,’ Egils Levits stressed.
According to President, Constitutional Court ‘has the necessary capacity to deal with modern challenges to democracy and fundamental rights’.
Aldis Laviņš, President of the Constitutional Court, introduced judge Jautrīte Briede to President of Latvia during the meeting. She became constitutional judge on 1 September this year. Constitutional Court now has a full panel of seven judges.
