Raimonds Vējonis
President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis regrets the decision of the British electorate to support exit of the country from the European Union (EU). At the same time, the President of Latvia emphasizes that the United Kingdom will continue to be an important ally and international partner for Latvia and the EU, with whom close relations shall be maintained.

“It is obvious that the British exit will affect and change the EU. The Member States of the organization must do their utmost to preserve the progress reached in the integration process, simultaneously promoting economic growth, global competitiveness, and public support,” indicated Raimonds Vējonis.

The Head of State points out that the negotiations for the rules of Britain’s exit from the EU and the future of relations should be started in the nearest future. The Latvian government should do everything necessary to protect its national interests, interests of Latvian nationals in the United Kingdom, and common interests of the EU Member States.

“A solution acceptable for all the parties concerned must be reached. This is an unprecedented case in the history of the European Union, therefore it is difficult to predict how long the process will be and what its outcome will be,” indicated President of Latvia Raimonds Vējonis.
