On 7 April, President of Latvia Egils Levits met with Georgia’s Defence Minister Juansher Burchuladze in the Riga Castle. During the meeting, President of Latvia reaffirmed Latvia’s unwavering support to Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic aspirations, including hands-on support in scope of NATO cooperation agenda.
Minister Burchuladze provided an insight into how Georgia ensures its active participation in international missions, including the one rolled out in Afghanistan, and presented Georgia’s military modernisation plans. President of Latvia and Georgia’s Defence Minister also discussed geopolitical developments in Georgia’s neighbouring countries and the region as a whole.
President Levits praised Georgia for its active involvement in international missions, which is a welcome step on country’s way towards full integration into European and Trans-Atlantic frameworks, while Minister Burchuladze confirmed that there is a strong support inside Georgia for country’s accession to NATO and the European Union (EU).
Juansher Burchuladze also gave an overview of the domestic political processes in Georgia. President Levits expressed hope that EU mediators will help Georgian government find an amicable solution to the current conflict with the opposition.
