President of Latvia: the rate of salary increases in the home affairs sector ought to be stepped up in 2024 as well

On 19 December, at Riga Castle President of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs met with Egils Baldzēns, President of the Free Trade Union Confederation of Latvia, to discuss issues pertaining to a competitive salary system for workers in Latvia. During the meeting, shortcomings in the salary systems in the home affairs, education, health and transport sectors were discussed.

President of Latvia Edgars Rinkēvičs highlighted that the rate of increasing salaries in the home affairs sector needs to be stepped up also in 2024, as unlike in the defence sector, the rate here is still insufficient and severely lagging behind. “This needs to be done alongside improving working conditions. Motivated employees in the home affairs sector are crucially important in order to strengthen the internal security of the state,” President Rinkēvičs stressed. In turn, the President of Latvia noted that in the education sector it is crucial that an appropriate solution be found for balancing educator workloads.
